The Arizona
Medical Association (ArMA) has tried for the last five years to convey to our
legislators how devastating a reduction in Medicare payments will be to the
sustainability of the program. Virtually every state medical association has
taken the same action. While there is uniform ag... | Continue reading ...

Medical Care
What this means is a DRAMATIC drop in Medicare if rates are fixed for 5 years and inflation in medical costs continue.Add to this horror the notion that the feds COULD cut rates 21%! Keep in mind that the feds SAY they want more preventive care and an emphasis on primary care which saves lives and cuts costs but any of these "fixes"would essentially KILL primary care by cutting the docs that make the LEAST amount of $ from Medicare. The domino effect is already happening throughout AZ. Many... Continue reading ...
Last night, I was invited to a “boys” night by a good friend. The ”boys” were all MD's- specialists- mostly guys that I know and respect by the way, as individuals and physicians. I have not socialized with them for a very long time and I was looking forward to the experience. BUT, the night was depressing for me because as we hung out it became clear that we have become VERY far apart.
These docs , who in some ways are representative of docs in private practice certainly in Ari... Continue reading ...

Medical Care
Adult primary care providers (PCP's-Family Doctors and Internists) are paid 55% of what reimbursement is typically for specialists Yet, specialists (cardiologists, radiologists, surgeons, etc.) increase the cost of care, increase the number of hospitalizations, and utilize pharmaceuticals in greater numbers, DECREASE lifespan and quality of life. PCP's, on the other hand, INCREASE length of life, DECREASE mortality and decrease all the other parameters I just mentioned like hospitalizations, ... Continue reading ...

Health Politics
Every time there is talk about universal health coverage, the political right scares you by yelling "socialism". They warn of "long lines" for care. They warn of rationing of medical services. They yell with pride that we have the "best" medical system in the world. Now, I am NOT on the right or the left. I AM a doctor and I want ALL American citizens to have access to health care. NO AMERICAN should worry about medical care and medicines for their families. NEVER!!!!! You will note that it i... Continue reading ...

Health Politics
I am a strong advocate of more access to health care for ALL Amercans. I want to see it affordable. I want to see it include integrative medicine (alternative and convenional care). I want folks to have a choice of their physicians and health care institutions. NO AMERICAN CITIZEN should go without health care coverage. On the other hand, who is going to pay for this? How are we going to finance more expense in a country that is on its knees financially? My greatest fear in the next year or s... Continue reading ...

Health Politics
I am hearing the term "Community Health Centers" as the "new" concept for primary care inner city and rural health care in the U.S. Well folks- been there and done that!!! The neighborhood health centers of the 70's DID serve a purpose but DID NOT resolve health care issues for the poor or the middle class may I say. These are primary care centers, typically run with a heart but GREAT inefficiency and with some indifference from the non medical doctor employees- like government employees.... Continue reading ...
