Cosmetics oxidize after you have opened the jar or removed the seal on the dispensng container. They pick up germs and in the end- lose their effectiveness and COULD be the harbinger of infections. I advise all my patients who use my special VITAMIN C CREAM that they use the contents DAILY (so they get their money's worth) and discard the jar after six months because it's efficay will probably start to decrease at that point. Another example would be MASCARA which comes in contact with your e... Continue reading ...

What this means is a DRAMATIC drop in Medicare if rates are fixed for 5 years and inflation in medical costs continue.Add to this horror the notion that the feds COULD cut rates 21%! Keep in mind that the feds SAY they want more preventive care and an emphasis on primary care which saves lives and cuts costs but any of these "fixes"would essentially KILL primary care by cutting the docs that make the LEAST amount of $ from Medicare. The domino effect is already happening throughout AZ. Many... Continue reading ...

A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when certain bacteria invade the urinary tract. Symptoms may include itching, burning, and painful urination.Women are most susceptible to these infections because of how they are "plumbed". Diagnosis of a UTI can be performed quickly and easily in a doctor's office or medical laboratory using a specimen of the patient's urine Here are some reasons women might get these infections:
- Wiping from back to front after a bowel movement.
- Having sex.
- Wear...

Below is a listing of seasonal (influenza A and B) flu vaccines.Did your doctor discuss these with you? Did you consider these possible adverse reactions and the actual (proven) benefits of the vaccine? Did your doctor give you a WRITTEN sheet with the PROVEN benefits of the vaccine? I truly doubt it, because very little has been PROVEN. If this is true of a vaccine that has been around a long time, how much do you think the feds REALLY know about the H1N1 vaccine?
Flu Vaccine FluMist

I am seeing more and more patients who have seen other "natural" providers who load the consumer up with LOTS of herbs and vitamins. One patient that I saw recently was taking 18 different products each with multiple herbs and vitamins inside. When I counted all that she was taking, she was consuming 138 different substances and was overdosing on Vitamin A! First, if it is natural does NOT maen it is safe! Next, how can ANYONE possibly determine the intercations between so many substances. Thi... Continue reading ...

I am all for creating a competitive environment in the matter of health insurance. I would like to see ALL Americans guaranteed some form of medical insurance. I am constantly befuddled as to why we would blow away money all over the world on wars we will not win and foreign aid to people who hate us and will never change their attitudes when that money can be used to create jobs, feed Americans and give us ALL health care. What are the feds thinking? I am getting increasingly worried about th... Continue reading ...

Estimates vary that indoor pollution can be between 5 and 10 times the pollution outside your home. Open up your windows a enough to allow some air transfer for at least some part of the day. Next, consider natural air cleaning plants.
The New Ecologist made a list of the top 10 anti-pollution houseplants. They rate the best as:
-
The Feston Rose plant
-
Devil’s Ivy
-
Phalaenopsis
-
English Ivy (My personal favorite)

Parlor Ivy
-
African Violets

Do faucets have lead?
Most faucets purchased prior to 1997 were constructed of brass or chrome-plated brass containing up to 8 percent lead (the main metals in brass are copper and zinc). Water sitting overnight (or for several hours) in a brass faucet tends to leach lead from the brass faucet interior which may produce relatively high lead levels in the first draw of drinking water. Due to recent regulations, most faucets purchased after 1997 contain less lead than previously used thereby l... Continue reading ...

I want a REAL healthcare reform. Not one that is another "do as I say- not as I do". Well before the elections I showed you in this blog Mr Obama- "Now you're smoking!" He still smokes but tells us about how WE should live our life. It is NOT a small thing that he can't stop smoking, but his healthcare reform would be biased against smokers. Now we have a surgeon general who is LARGE! I have no problem with this- except the US needs to wage a war on obesity which is the most costly disease we... Continue reading ...

This is my list of “must haves” for your home in this flu and cold season that has already begun. I do NOT think that it is clear at all as to the actual benefits of the flu vaccine. I have not seen any substantive evidence that the flu vaccine (for “regular” flu- A and B) has decreased mortality in anyone- let alone seniors and in some studies (like kids with asthma who had been vaccinated) actually increased hospitalizations when compared to those children who were NOT vaccinated... GOUT
One interesting study suggests that Vitamin C taken by mouth can decrease the number of gout attacks which are caused by elevated levels of uric acid in the blood. The higher the dose (up to 1,000 mg), the fewer the attacks. This is definitely an option for many, although it does not address the fact that high uric acid is itself a risk factor for heart disease and Vitamin C does NOT lower uric acid. Whether it will prove to lower cardiovascular risk in those with gout as well remains to be s... Continue reading ...

Heel Pain
Heels can take a beating from a range of activities, including heavy impact exercise or wearing poorly fitted shoes.
What I like for heel pain:
- Take a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (It is a gel or a strip that can be applied to the heel.) to help manage pain. Avoid, if possible, antiinflammatories that are taken by mouth and absorbed systemically.
- Try Lidoderm patches filled with pain killer and apllied topically.
- Ice the heel or freeze any bottle and then roll your...

- Hormonal changes.

Pedicures can be dangerous- spreading infections. Here's some safety tips that you should NOT forget:
- Schedule one of the first appointments in the morning when tubs are cleanest. Or make sure your technician disinfects the tub before your pedicure.
- Bring your own pedicure tools. Use separate tools for pedicures and manicures to prevent contamination between toes and fingers.
- Skip shaving your legs before the appointment to help prevent bacteria from entering the skin.
- Have your feet...

Choosing A Doctor Part 2: First Test
On Sunday, you fall on a rock and hurt your ankle. It's swollen and painful. You can (choose one):
a. Go to an Emergency Room on Sunday. Pay a big copay or deductible depending on your insurance. Wait in a room with coughing and screaming people for 2 hours and then be seen. An emergency room doctor who will not see you ever again wants to be sure not to miss anything. You get a shot for pain, a tetanus shot, X-rays, MR or CT scan, some kind of wa... Continue reading ...

The following is my list that I suggest for colds and the flu. There is NO guarantee or ANY research about the use of these products to prevent or treat the flu although they MAY attenuate symptoms once you have knowingly been infected. More will be learned about the "new" Swine flu that is already in Mexico and the U.S. and appears to be spreading so I will update this blog in this regard with my comments. Unlike SARS which was never a global threat of pandemic proportions to humans, this fl... Continue reading ...

We all know that physicians hide when a lawyer enters the room. The relationship between physicians and lawyers as a result of medical malpractice law suits is fabled and seemingly still discussed trembling with fear and filled with disdain at every opportunity by doctors. Over its lifetime, a single CFL can save the consumer $80 or more, depending on local electric rates and the climate ac... Continue reading ...

Every time there is talk about universal health coverage, the political right scares you by yelling "socialism". They warn of "long lines" for care. They warn of rationing of medical services. They yell with pride that we have the "best" medical system in the world. Now, I am NOT on the right or the left. I AM a doctor and I want ALL American citizens to have access to health care. NO AMERICAN should worry about medical care and medicines for their families. NEVER!!!!! You will note that it i... Continue reading ...
