The DrB Surviving Health Care Hell Newletter

The newletter is published on line once a week and sent to you via e mail. It includes subjects not covered on the radio show that are timely and, of course, my comments. It is fast reading, easily digestible and infinitely applicable to your daily life. In addition, late breaking news that could effect you immediately will be published to your email address as soon as it is available.

Actual example:

" Zetia (ezetimide), used by millions with statin drigs to lower cholesterol appears to be less effective than taking  slow release niacin for reducing plaque build up in arteries of those with elevated cholesterol. Niacin which can be purchased cheaply in a drug or health food store raises HDL or so called good cholesterol. In addition, niacin when combined with a statin reduced the number of heart attacks and deaths. There has been a lot of question about the use of Zetia with Simvistatin (Vytorin) in the treatment of elevated cholesterol. The combination of the two dramatically reduces cholesterol in many BUT might actually increase mortality and heart attacks.

My advice is stay away from the above drugs despite what your doctor has to say. He/She has , no doubt, been bombarded with samples to hook you and disinformation to confuse him/her to counter the mounting evidence against these  products. Ask for alternatives and do not forget that diet and exercise  still make a difference. Unless your doctor has a good reason for you not taking Fish Oil (such as Familial Polyposis, for example) I can not think of a more important supplement alongside Niacin for you to take daily- esp. if you have elevated cholesterol and/or decreased levels of HDL. Statins ARE effective (especially for very high cholesterol levels, elevated CRP's or diabetics) , but, they are often troublesome with many side effects-liver, neuropathy, muscle disease.Remember, red Yeast Rice IS a natual statin so expect comparable adverse effects. I would go over the options with your doctor carefully and insist on a discussion of these alternatives with your primary care doctor or cardiologist BEFORE making a decision. If you DO take a statin , be sure to take at least 30 mg of Co enzyme Q 10 daily with it. Zetia, should NOT be an option at this point.

One other thing, this is a great example of why you treat the patient and the OUTCOME of treatment- not the numbers which is one of the great failures of contemporary U.S. medicine. Use Zeta and Simvistatin (Vytorin) and the numbers (cholesteol) look great, BUT, the patient dies ! There are a lot more examples of this crisis in American Medicine that you will be hearing about over the coming years. Stay tuned!  Sam"
